The former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the continued captivity of 37 students and their teachers abducted by bandits in Oyo State, urging the President to either resign or abandon any plans to seek re-election in 2027.
According to Obi, he was shocked to learn during the meeting that Governor Makinde had not received a single phone call from President Tinubu since the incident happened more than 50 days ago.
Obi said he had initially assumed the President had been in regular contact with the governor over efforts to secure the release of the abducted students and teachers.
Drawing a comparison with the 2014 abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls under former President Goodluck Jonathan, Obi recalled that Tinubu, then an opposition leader, was among those who criticised Jonathan and demanded his resignation over his handling of the crisis.
He noted that since Tinubu assumed office, Nigeria has witnessed more than 13 school abductions, arguing that the current administration has failed to demonstrate both compassion and urgency in responding to the security challenges.
Obi described the situation as evidence of a collapse in governance, accusing the Federal Government of lacking the capacity and empathy required to protect Nigerians.
"The President should either resign or, at the very least, abstain from seeking re-election for the sake of our dear country. This call is patriotic, not political. A New Nigeria is POssible," Obi stated.
He also said the prolonged captivity of the students, teachers, and other kidnapped Nigerians reflects a failure of leadership and called for stronger action to tackle the country's worsening insecurity.
